Description of the Procedure Polysomnography (PSG) is a comprehensive, multi-channel physiologic recording performed overnight in a specialized sleep laboratory. It continuously records brain activity, eye movements, muscle tone, heart rhythm, breathing, oxygen levels, and body position to characterize sleep architecture and identify sleep disorders. You will sleep in a private bedroom in the sleep laboratory while a sleep technologist monitors your recordings from an adjacent room throughout the night. The study is non-invasive; no sedatives or sleep-inducing medications are administered (unless part of an approved protocol). **Signals routinely recorded during PSG:** - **Electroencephalogram (EEG):** Brain electrical activity recorded via small gold or silver electrodes applied to the scalp using conductive paste — used to identify sleep stages (N1, N2, N3, REM) and seizure activity - **Electrooculogram (EOG):** Eye movement sensors placed near the outer corners of the eyes — identifies REM sleep and eye movement abnormalities - **Electromyogram (EMG):** Muscle activity sensors placed on the chin, legs (anterior tibialis), and in some cases intercostal muscles — identifies muscle tone changes, limb movements, and REM sleep atonia - **Electrocardiogram (ECG):** Two-lead cardiac rhythm recording throughout the night - **Respiratory effort belts:** Elastic bands placed around the chest and abdomen to measure breathing effort - **Nasal-oral airflow:** Temperature-sensitive thermistor at the nose and mouth, and/or pressure transducer at the nasal cannula, to measure airflow - **Pulse oximetry:** Continuous oxygen saturation monitoring via a sensor clipped to a finger - **End-tidal or transcutaneous CO2 monitoring:** Used in selected patients (pediatric, hypoventilation syndromes) - **Body position sensor:** Records sleeping position throughout the night - **Snoring microphone or piezoelectric sensor** - **Video recording:** Continuous infrared camera recording of your body during the study to correlate movements or behaviors with physiologic signals
